1Lovely Aurora
, when wilt thou appear 2And with thy lightsome looks my spirit cheer?
3Methinks thou let’st old Night
too much prevail; 4She too long laps
us in her sable veil
, 5Which makes me fear confusèd Chaos
might 6Involve
this globe (once more) in shades of night. 7Fool that I am, so foolishly to think
, 8As if ’twere dark because my eyes do wink,
9When he hath said (whose Word
shall never fail) 10That truth and light and life should still
prevail. 11Then do but show the lustre of thine eye,
12And these black Embryons
with their dam will fly. 13If day (my soul) so delectable
be, 14What will the Resurrection
be to thee? 15Whenas
the last (and loudest) trump shall sound
, 16Which will be heard the universal round,
17That from our drowsy causes
shall us wake, 18Then shall we darkness, dust, and death off shake
, 19And in our sleeping
urns
no longer lie; 20But being clothed with immortality
, 21Guided by grace and truth, where love doth dwell,
22Whilst Night, death, error, shall be trod to hell,
23Then on soft mercy’s wings
I’ll mount above, 24Where all shall end in
endless joy and love
.
