How To Tell If You’re in a
Hester Pulter Poem
In imitation of the series "How to Tell If You’re in a Novel,” from the late, lamented, but not forgotten, The Toast
By Lara Dodds
- You are judging the moral qualities of the flowers in your back garden.
- You find you can’t judge the moral qualities of the flowers in your garden.
- You know what “calcining” is and can use it as a metaphor for your spiritual condition.
- You open the bedroom window and your soul communes with the planets.
- You refuse to be confined against the noble freedom of your mind.
- You apostrophize Death.
- You wish to be dissolved into dust and atoms.
- You seek union with God but know that it will not be possible in this lifetime.
- A bird in your yard provides occasion for philosophical reflection.
- So does a porcupine.
- And a whale.
- And a moose.
- OK. Almost anything provides occasion for philosophical reflection.
- Verse expresses grief and consolation for grief. It’s terrible. And beautiful.
