1And
must the sword this controverse
decide: 2Which of these factions
shall this kingdom ride
? 3Great God, look on their pride and hear their boasts;
4Declare thy self alone the Lord of Hosts
; 5Confound their plots and cursed imagination
6That have almost destroyed this church and nation.
7For blood they thirst: O, let them be imbrued
8In one another’s, that have oft
bedewed 9With tears sad widows’ and poor orphans’ eyes;
10Be deaf to theirs, as they were to their
cries. 11As in their height
they mercy ne’er would know, 12In their extremes
no mercy to them show. 13But in that dismal, black, and bloody day
, 14Give all thy chosen ones
their life, I pray, 15And let our longing eyes behold, restored,
16Our gracious king
, whose loss hath been deplored
17So long by us. O, let him rest above
18In providence
, and in the orb of love
19Let all his actions move, as in his youth;
20And let them turn upon the poles of truth
. 21Let Time’s fair virgin daughter
pen his story, 22Whilst Grace conducts him to eternal glory;
23And then, when total nature is dissolved,
24Let him and his
in glory be involved; 25And on all those that do thy Israel
love, 26Let peace, and truth, flow on them from above.
